But does it work?

Won't it just spray out the sides?

No - PDT is the most effective technology to diffuse the pressure & force generated and the flange joing and therefore will mitigate the risk of spray.

Isn’t hook and loop designed to open easily?

YES - But the shear strength of the shield keeps it securely attached to the flange joint, even under high pressure.
